ACC Basketball: Week 1 Power Rankings

The college basketball season is underway and the ACC has seen some interesting games take place in the first week. What does the first edition of the ACC Power Rankings look like after a week?

1. Wake Forest (3-0): The Demon Deacons are coming off a huge win over Michigan, and Steve Forbes looks to be on track to give Wake Forest its third 20-win season under his leadership since arriving in 2020.

2. UNC (1-1): An Elliot Cadeau triple is all that separates the Tar Heels from a possible number one spot in the polls. UNC looks in the thick of things to be at the top of the ACC all season long.

3. Duke (2-0): Two dominant wins, led by freshmen Kon Knueppel and Cooper Flagg, ensure that Tuesday’s game against No. 23 Kentucky will test this young but promising team.

4. Miami (2-0): While back-to-back wins to open a non-conference schedule aren’t usually good enough in the ACC to garner much praise, Miami’s 65-point margin of victory is.

5. Clemson (2-0): The Tigers start undefeated, but not without close games in what Brad Brownell hopes will be his third straight 20-plus year.

6. Pittsburgh (2-0): Does Pitt deserve to be this high this early? Probably not, but they are one of the few teams left that have had a smooth start to the season.

7. SMU (2-0): The Mustangs have entered the ACC with a smooth transition so far, and while they may fall in the long run, after two big wins, they deserve a spot in the top half for now.

8. Stanford (2-0) : Two big wins against weak opposition puts them in a group that sees them mixed with teams yet to face a real test and fail.

9. Virginia Tech (2-0): The Hokies struggled in both halves of the first two games, however, a strong second twenty years means Mike Young’s team remains undefeated.

10. NC status (2-0): The defending ACC champions are off to a decent start, a nine-point win over Presbyterian is an unexpected hiccup, but there has been no real conclusion yet regarding the early part of this season.

11. Florida State (2-0): Leonard Hamilton’s team escaped the blocks by a margin of just 20 points between Northern Kentucky and Rice.

12. UVA (1-0): The Cavaliers are obviously stronger in terms of talent than many of the teams above them. However, coming off a nine-point win over Campbell and a long-term head coaching search that still has question marks looming, they are being called in the bottom half of the ACC polls this week.

13. Notre Dame (1-0): The Fighting Irish continue to be a side that leaves analysts confused as to where they will finish. a nearly 30-point win in the season opener can propel them higher up this list. However, this is a team that will be stuck in the middle for most of this season.

14. California (2-0): The Golden Bears have a team that has been projected toward the bottom of the ACC, and so far Cal has struggled to put together big wins and will likely peak in that area throughout the season.

15. Syracuse (1-0): A four-point win over Le Moyne should obviously be a much larger margin for a ball club looking to rebuild from the Boeheim era. This will probably be as low as the hit ‘Cuse this season, but Le Moyne has been a point of concern that should be forgotten about in the coming games.

16. Louisville (1-1): Cardinals embark on new future with head coach Pat Kelsey; Kelsey and his team fell to No. 22 Tennessee in a game where the Volunteers eventually cruised to a 22-point victory.

17. Georgia Tech (1-1): The YellowJackets are a team that I thought would be a dark horse in the ACC, certainly not to win it, but to get some big wins and ruffle some feathers come ACC tournament time for sure. but a loss to red-faced North Florida puts them on that list, for now.

18. Boston College (1-1): The Eagles were a losing team during the summer, Quinten Post and Devin McGlockton. So far, a nine-point win over The Citadel and a 25-point loss to VCU portends a season full of struggles.
