Top 3 areas in Houston with the most home burglaries

A KPRC 2 Investigates investigation uncovered the top spots in the city’s home burglaries, revealing the worst-hit neighborhoods and providing insights from law enforcement experts.

Where do the burglaries take place?

The Houston Police Department’s data review sought to identify areas with the highest burglary rates. The results may surprise residents, especially with the prime location being a Westside neighborhood near Westheimer.

#1. Westheimer, west side, inside the Sam Houston Tollway

With 184 burglaries reported since January 1, 2024, this neighborhood has been identified as the most targeted in Houston. Apartment complexes, especially those with security flaws, have become prime targets for criminals.

#2. Sunnyside and surrounding neighborhoods

This area, located east of 288 and on both sides of the South Loop, has seen 142 residential burglary reports this year, making it the second worst hit area. This area is home to a mix of large government subsidized housing and new and old homes.

#3. Southwest Houston near Gessner and Bellfort

This area, anchored by both Fondren and Gessner near Bellfort, has had its share of problems so far this year. This area ranks third with many residents, including Matt Amonds, experiencing multiple burglaries.

There have been 120 residential burglary calls for service so far this year.

“To have someone break into your home, it gives you an uneasy feeling, that’s your safe place,” Amonds said.

Perspectives from law enforcement

Retired Detective Greg Shelton, who spent decades with the Houston Police Department, shared his insights into burglary patterns.

According to Shelton, most residential burglaries typically occur between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., when many residents are away from home. He pointed out that a car in the driveway and a radio playing can deter would-be thieves.

Protecting your home

Residents are urged to take preventative measures to protect their homes. Shelton recommends three key strategies:

  • Light your property: Keeping your exterior well-lit can deter thieves.

  • Install visible security cameras: A clear security presence can deter crime. Point one of them at the street in front of your house.

  • Property perimeter security: Ensuring that gates and fences are intact and can prevent unauthorized access.
