Following Donald Trump’s successful election bid to regain the US presidency, protesters have taken to the streets across the country, says The Guardian.

Thousands of people in major cities including New York and Seattle demonstrated against the former president and now president-elect amid his threats against reproductive rights and promises to carry out mass deportations early in his next presidency.

In New York City on Saturday, demonstrators from advocacy groups focused on workers’ rights and immigrant justice gathered in front of the Trump International Hotel and Tower on 5th Avenue holding signs that read: “We protect ourselves” and ” Mr. President, how long do women have to wait? freedom?” Others held signs reading: “We will not back down” as they chanted: “Here we are and we are not leaving!”

Similar protests took place in Washington DC, where participants in the Women’s March demonstrated outside the Heritage Foundation, the right-wing thinktank behind Project 2025. Images posted on social media on Saturday showed demonstrators holding signs that read: “Women well worn don’t make history’ and ‘You’re never alone’. Demonstrators also chanted: “We believe we will win!” and held other placards that read: “Where is my freedom when I have no choice?”

Crowds of demonstrators also gathered in front of the Space Needle in Seattle on Saturday. “March and rally to protest Trump and the bipartisan war machine,” protest posters said, adding, “Build the grassroots movement and fight war, repression and genocide!” Addressing a crowd of demonstrators, some dressed in raincoats while others wore keffiyehs in solidarity with Palestinians amid Israel’s deadly war in Gaza, one protester said: “Any president who came to power he also disappointed the workers”.

On Friday, protesters gathered outside City Hall in Portland, Ore., in a similar anti-Trump demonstration. Signs carried by demonstrators included messages that read: “Fight Fascism” and “Turn fear into struggle.”

“We are here because we have been fighting for health, housing and education for years. And whether it was Trump or (Joe) Biden before that, we didn’t get that and we want to push to get that. accomplished,” said Cody Urban, a president of the American chapter of the International People’s Struggle League, KGW reported.

Also on Friday, dozens of protesters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, gathered in Point Start Park to protest Trump’s election victory. People carried signs that read: “We’re not going back” and “My body, my choice.”

“We’re afraid of what’s coming, but we’re not going to back down,” Steve Capri, an organizer with Socialist Alternative, told WPXI TV. “Trump is an attack on all of us, so we must unite, we must organize, join movements, study and learn together.”
