How Airbnb plans to crack down on Halloween parties

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — Ahead of Halloween weekend, Airbnb is cracking down on house parties in Arizona and the US

Some anti-party defenses include blocking certain one-night and two-night holiday weekend stays. They use machine learning technology to identify and reject these potentially high-risk requests.

Some high-risk indicators include whether the stay is booked at the last minute, length of trip, and distance to listing.

“The vast majority of Airbnb guests are responsible travelers and problems are rare. We want to support our hosts and local communities by trying to further reduce the risk of disruptive parties, and we believe these measures will help us do just that,” said Tara Bunch, Global Head of Operations at Airbnb.

Airbnb adopted a similar “defensive strategy” last year. The company says the systems blocked more than 31,000 people in the U.S. from booking short stays over the Halloween weekend and saw reported parties drop.

Specifically, in Phoenix, those defenses deterred about 400 people from booking on Airbnb last Halloween. Last year in Arizona, 3,900 people were deterred.

Airbnb is 24/7 Neighborhood Helpline where residents can report listing concerns to the company. Hosts also have access to a hotline to report suspicious parties while they are in progress.
