An apartment complex will host a candlelight vigil Friday for the child who died in an officer-involved shooting

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Police are still tight-lipped about what happened Thursday at the Oval Spring Apartments. Much of what happened remains unclear. However, two people – a woman who was armed with a knife and a child – died afterwards a policeman fired his gun.

“It was a terrible incident. We are incredibly saddened by this,” he said Oval Spring Apartments property manager Carrie Lufkin on Saturday. “It was terrible. I saw some terrible things that I will never get out of my mind.”

“It was just an unfortunate turn of events,” said Gavin Delaney, assistant property manager, who also witnessed what happened Thursday. “I don’t think anybody wanted this to happen.”

Next Friday, Oval Spring Apartments will host a memorial vigil for the child who passed away. The vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the public is invited to attend. The memorial will include candles and a balloon release – in front of the building where the incident took place.

“It affects everyone. It affects the family; affect the legal bodies that were involved. It was absolutely tragic. I can’t imagine being that family,” Lufkin said. “We want to do the right thing and let everyone know that we are deeply saddened and we care so much.”

Next week, the complex will have mental health professionals on site. They will be there to help the apartment community through the emotions of what happened.

“These are their homes. To be disrupted in your home with an event and a tragedy like what happened, everyone has their own ways of processing and we want to be able to help with that,” said Delaney.

As the situation is classified as an Officer Involved Shooting, it is being investigated by the Police Involved Incident Team. Blue Springs Police are the lead agency on the investigation. KCTV5 reached out to the department for an update, but did not hear back. The officer who fired the gun — as well as two others — is on administrative leave.
