SUPAI, AZ — The Havasupai Tribe is set to receive emergency federal aid to help repair damage caused by severe and deadly floods this summer.

President Joe Biden on Friday approved a disaster declaration for the Havasupai, whose reservation on the southwest rim of Grand Canyon National Park is one of the most remote in the continental US, accessible only by foot, mule or helicopter.

Flash floods in late August, it swept an Arizona woman into the Havasu Creek above the confluence of the Colorado River, killing her.

Also, running waters sent the hikers scrambling for high ground and caught several in the area above and below Beaver Falls, one of a series of typically blue-green waterfalls that draw tourists from around the world to the scenic spot.

The area is prone to turning floods iconic waterfalls a brown-chocolate color.

Federal aid will help with emergency repairs and can also be used for temporary housing. The Federal Emergency Management Agency said in a press release Friday that it will coordinate recovery operations in the affected areas.
