Albany police make arrest in connection with assault incident, officer injured in process

Albany police say they have arrested James Farmer, 41, of Albany and charged him in connection with an assault that happened Friday afternoon.

The assault incident happened in the area of ​​Jay Street and Quail Street around 4:30 p.m

Officers say they observed an argument between Farmer and another man, and Farmer hit the man in the head with a glass bottle and hit him in the back of the head several times. The victim and Farmer are known to each other, police said.

The 50-year-old male victim is said to have suffered pain and swelling to the back of his head.

When officers tried to intervene and arrest Farmer, he ignored their commands, police said.

Albany police add that during the incident, while Farmer was actively resisting arrest, it resulted in an officer suffering injuries to his hand.

Officers arrested Farmer and took him into custody after a short foot pursuit.

Police say Farmer is charged with the following:

  • Second degree assault
  • Second-degree obstruction of governmental administration
  • Third-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Disorderly conduct
  • Resisting arrest

The farmer was arraigned in Albany Criminal Court Saturday morning and remanded to the Albany County Jail.
