Mazda confirms a CX-5 hybrid and an electric SUV are on the way

Mazda may be making progress in bringing back an electric vehicle (EV) to the United States.

Ever since interrupted MX-30 EV in the U.S. Last year, the Japanese automaker had zero electric vehicle offerings for potential U.S. customers.

And things didn’t look any brighter last summer when Mazda launched the model new EV-6its first global electric sedan. Prospective US buyers never quite got around to sharing the excitement generated by the electric vehicle’s sub-$25,000 starting price. Given that the EV-6 was built in partnership with China’s Changan Automobile, doubts quickly arose about whether it would ever pass the 100 percent tariffs imposed on Chinese electric vehicles by the Biden administration.

Now, however, Mazda has a series of announcements indicating that it is taking vehicle electrification into its own hands, possibly reopening the path to hybrid and EV offerings in the US

The Japanese automaker has announced that it is developing its own hybrid system for the next-generation CX-5 crossover SUV, due for release between 2025 and 2027. CX-5 non-electric it was Mazda’s the best seller vehicle in USA

And by 2027, Mazda says it also plans to launch an electric SUV from its own EV platform. Plug-in hybrid variants are also being considered.

The new electric SUV is expected to resemble The Mazda Arata conceptwhich was presented at the Beijing Motor Show alongside the EV-6 sedan last summer. Mass production of the Arata is scheduled for late 2025 for a first introduction to the Chinese market.

On the road to electrification, Mazda also said it has signed agreements with AESC and Panasonic to supply batteries until 2030.

And looking beyond to 2028 and 2030, Mazda promises a “large-scale rollout” of electric vehicles.
