Tony Todd, Candyman Star, has died aged 69

Tony Todd, the actor known for his roles in Candyman, Final destinationmoreover, he died at the age of 69.

According to Todd’s representatives, the actor died at his home in Los Angeles on November 6. No official cause of death has been reported at this time.

Born in 1954 in Washington, DC, Todd began his acting career on the stage, studying theater at the University of Connecticut before joining renowned theater companies such as the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and Trinity Repertory Company. In the 1980s, he began landing screen roles, his first major role being in Oliver Stone’s Best Picture winner, Pluto.

From there, Todd built a prolific filmography in film and television, appearing in shows such as 21 Jump Street, The night court, MacGyver, Matlock, Star Trek: The Next Generationand more, as well as movies like the 1990 remake Night of the Living Dead.

Todd’s most iconic role, however, came in 1992 when he was cast as the titular character in the folk horror film. Candymanwhich spawned two sequels later in the decade: 1995 Candyman: Farewell to the body and the 1999s Candyman: Day of the Dead.

Throughout the 1990s, Todd also had roles in other acclaimed titles such as movies. The raven and Rockas well as series like Law and order, The X files, Murder, she wrote, Beverly Hills, 90210, Xena: Warrior Princess, Star Trek: Voyagerand many others.

In 2000, Todd joined another beloved horror franchise, playing undertaker William Bludworth in the first film. Final destination film. He would go on to reprise the role in several films, including in the future Final Destination: Bloodlineswhich is currently in post-production and will arrive as a posthumous release for Todd in 2025.

Other roles in Todd’s later years have included voice parts for video games such as Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Dota 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops IIand many more, as well as a number of on-screen roles. In 2021, it returned to Candyman franchise for Sequel directed by Nia DaCostawith a script co-written by Jordan Peele.

Following Todd’s passing, fans and collaborators poured in tributes, including his own Candyman Co-star Virginia Madsen, who called him “my Candyman boyfriend” in a video posted on Instagram. “The great actor Tony Todd has left us and is now an angel. As it was in life,” she wrote in the caption.
