Ceremony honoring fallen Worcester firefighter Jason Menard

WORCESTER – Despite the extremely warm temperatures of late, this time of year has traditionally become the coldest time of year for the city of Worcester.

On the fifth anniversary of Lt. Jason Menard’s death in the line of duty, the Worcester Fire Department will hold a memorial unveiling and dedication Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the McKeon Road Fire Station, 80 McKeon Road.

On November 13, 2019, Menard died in a fire on Stockholm Street.

That day, Menard’s crew was called to a three-family home at 7 Stockholm St. Menard became trapped in the flames after helping another firefighter reach the stairwell.

This time of year is difficult for the city’s firefighters as they pause to remember fallen colleagues.

Dec. 3 will mark 25 years since fire filled the Worcester Cold Storage & Warehouse Co at Grafton and Franklin streets. Six firefighters died in the fire: Lt. Thomas Spencer42 and Lt. James Lyons34, both of Worcester; and the firefighters Paul Brotherton41, of Auburn; Lt. Timothy Jackson51, of Hopedale; Jeremiah Lucey38, of Leicester; and Joseph McGuirk38, from Worcester.

On December 8, it will be 13 years since the firefighter’s death in the line of duty Jon Davies Sr. while fighting a fire on Arlington Street.

December 9 will be six years since Firefighter Christopher Roy was killed in a fire. on Lowell Street.

Mayor Joseph M. Petty, City Manager Eric D. Batista and General Counsel Kathleen M. Toomey, who also chairs the Standing Committee on Public Safety, as well as other city councilors, are scheduled to attend the November event. 13 ceremony for Menard.
