Lightning kills one student and injures six in Kassanda

At least one student has been confirmed dead and six others injured after lightning struck Kalwana Primary School in Kassanda District.

The police identified the victim of the Friday afternoon incident (2:00 p.m.) as a third primary student Jackeline Namawejje, 14.
The survivors are; Sarah Naiga, 13; Scovia Namaganda, 10; Prossy Nalubega, 13; Joan Nabankema, 14; Roden Ntuuyo, 13 – all Primary Three students and Mary Navuga, 13 from Primary Four.

Preliminary police findings indicate that at around 2pm on Friday, Namawejje was in the Primary 3 classroom with other students and their teacher Sarah Alinyikira Mugenyi, who was marking the students’ books while it was raining.

To the shock of everyone in the classroom, lightning struck the classroom through the window, killing one student and injuring six others.

“The injured were rushed to Lwanjiri III Health Center for treatment and Kassanda IV Health Center for treatment and quite well, they are steadily improving,” Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson Ms Racheal Kawala said on Saturday .
The latest tragic incident comes six days after a lightning strike last Sunday killed at least 14 people and injured 34 others during a church service in Zone 8, Block 2 of Palabek Settlement Camp in Lamwo District.
