A parade to mark the opening of a First World War memorial will be recreated to mark its 100th anniversary.

The Carnforth War Memorial was unveiled in 1924 in front of 2,000 people to commemorate the Lancashire town’s servicemen who died in the conflict.

A year later, a plaque was added honoring those who died from injuries sustained after the war, usually from the lingering effects of poison gas.

A representative of the Australian High Commission will also lay a wreath at Saturday’s parade in memory of a resident who moved to the country before dying in the conflict.

The memorial was modified in 1947 to include the names of those who died during World War II

Local councilor Ian Laurence said: “Based on images from November 1924, our parade will be a re-enactment of the original march, starting at 2.20pm from Carnforth High School, along Kellet Road and Market Street to the War Memorial Gardens, where a public audience. the service will take place and the present Lord Cavendish will give a commemoration, just as his grandfather did 100 years ago.”

The memorial includes a bronze figure of a soldier, which was sculpted by Percy Bentham.

It was amended in 1947 to include the names of those who died during World War II.
