Military silhouettes in Stowe Gardens D-Day break visitor records

It is the first time the work, created by community artist Dan Barton from Oxford charity Standing with Giants, has been shown in the UK.

Prior to its arrival at Stow, it has been on display in Normandy, France since April.

The large-scale art installation features two nurses, Sister Mollie Evershed, from Soham, Cambridgeshire, and Sister Dorothy Field, from Ringwood, Hampshire, who died saving 75 men from a sinking hospital ship.

About 50 silhouettes of French resistance fighters were also placed in the forest.

There will be a short memorial service on Monday when, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month (marking the end of the First World War), each of the 1,475 figures will be joined by a person.
