PGCPS discusses plans for 2025-26 school year at legislative day – NBC4 Washington

Prince George’s County Public Schools hosted its annual legislative day to update state and county officials on its goals for the 2025-26 school year.

Millard House Superintendent said he and the Board of Education are preparing for a future without COVID-19 funds.

“We don’t even know what those state funds look like yet, but we’re anticipating some numbers that could be coming,” House said.

School leaders released a list of priorities and financial support needed to maintain the school system’s commitment to students, school safety, teacher recruitment and retention, construction, facilities and curriculum.

“We need your support in partnership in funding, and we need your support and partnership to make sure we have the resources to do what we know is right,” said Dr. Judy White, PGCPS Academic Director.

Last year, the administration installed new security features at all Prince George’s middle schools, according to school leaders. This year, they aim to fund vape detectors in high schools.

With more than half of the county’s school buildings at least 40 years old, PGCPS leaders want to focus on keeping them better.

“There’s only so much you can patch and patch and patch. At some point, the leaks are going to continue to occur, and now you’re starting to experience additional damage,” said Will Smith, the school district’s project management supervisor.

The board aims to address the recruitment and retention of educators as part of the plan.

House said he and the Board of Education hope the funds allocated to the school system will be enough to help solve future fiscal problems.
