Corpus Christi Lake residents are concerned about public safety in the water

SAN PATRICIO, TX — Lake Corpus Christi has dropped significantly since the beginning of the year. Now, some lake residents are concerned about public safety in the water.

“The interesting thing is that it didn’t start until the water level was gone,” said lake resident Joh Ahrens.

Ahrens has lived on the lake for three years. As the water level began to drop, John noticed one thing in particular.

“Trees coming out of the water near the dam and near the park. There are many of them that cause potential hazards and dangers to boaters and tubes,” Ahrens said.

Trees in Corpus Christi Lake have become a growing problem.

“My wife says she doesn’t want to go in the water because she’s afraid of getting run over by these trees,” Ahrens said.

Ahren’s concern comes after two people drowned in Lake Corpus Christi over the weekend.

“Unfortunately, at Lake Corpus Christi, we’ve had several drownings this year,” said lifeguard captain Ben Baker.

The total number of drownings is four, an unusually high number for Texas Parks and Wildlife.

“Most of the drownings were from swimming. Not using a personal flotation device was not used in all cases,” Baker said.

Baker urges visitors to be aware of their surroundings as water levels remain low.

“Areas they’ve known before as grateful slops might be a little unpredictable,” Baker said.

Although none of the drownings have been attributed to any lake hazards, Ahrens wants answers.

“This is one of my biggest concerns and why I want to bring this to the attention of the lake managers. This is being pursued,” Ahrens said.

With some of those issues addressed at Lake Corpus Christi, Ahrens and his neighbors hope to see the lake safe and navigable when the water returns.
