According to the arrest warrant, the victim was protesting and crossed the street to approach John-Paul. The victim said “Here Kitty Kitty” to John-Paul before he turned around, grabbed the victim’s face and held up his phone as if recording her, according to the warrant.

The warrant added that John-Paul “knocked the brim of (the victim’s) baseball cap,” then turned and left. A witness told police he “observed the defendant hit (the victim’s) hat twice.”

Sandra Caron is the protester who got into the altercation with John-Paul. She said she had never been so angry or scared.

“I called him, yes I did, ‘here kitty,’ and he came back and said you called me too,” Caron said.

Police say once John-Paul touched the brim of Caron’s baseball cap, he turned to leave.

Video of the incident does not appear to show the assault, although immediately after the possible attack, the victim can be heard screaming on the video, “Don’t touch me,” according to the warrant.

He appeared before a judge Thursday morning and was granted a $776 cash bond. John-Paul declined to speak with ABC15 because he and his attorney have left the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

His attorney, Russell Long, said he blames the city of Myrtle Beach for failing to protect John-Paul from protesters.

“It was literally impossible for John Paul and others around him to live in peace, and frankly, I have to blame the city of Myrtle Beach,” Long said.

ABC15 reached out to the Myrtle Beach Police Department for a response to Long’s comments, but did not hear back at the time of publication.
