Crews clear I-64 after two semi crashes left debris, causing major traffic delays

Cleanup efforts were underway Thursday afternoon along westbound Interstate 64, where 36,000 pounds of burned chicken were being cleaned up by hazardous materials crews after two semis, one carrying frozen chicken, s -crashed into the lane dividers earlier in the day.

Interstate 64 was shut down around 4 a.m. after sources said a tractor trailer carrying auto parts crashed into an eastbound barrier and burst into flames.

As crews continued to clean up damage and debris from the crash, another westbound semi carrying thousands of pounds of frozen chicken struck a traffic barrier, also bursting into flames.

Although none of the drivers were injured during the incident, traffic was completely stopped on the highway.

All vehicles were diverted onto Route 60, forcing some parents to wait hours to pick up their children from school.

Cabell County Schools Communications Director Dr. Ashley Stephens, said all buses and departures were on time, but she expected delays for students to return home.

“We fully understand that this is one of those situations where we’re all in this together,” Stephens said.

Alyssa Thaxton said she left for work around 2:30 p.m. but didn’t arrive until 4:45 p.m., so she spent the time looking through social media and talking to family.

“I took the 29th exit and thought that would be the best route. No, absolutely not,” Thaxton said. “It was just full. The interstate looked open, but I still took the 29th exit and then got stuck in more traffic.”

Road crews are installing temporary lights so drivers can better see the dividers. Sources said this is the third incident involving traffic barriers in six days.

It’s unclear what caused either crash, but authorities are reminding drivers that solid white lines through construction sites should not be crossed.
