Hubble watches neutron stars collide and explode to create black hole and ‘birth atoms’

Astronomers witnessed the titanic collision between two neutron stars that gave birth to the smallest black hole ever seen and forged precious metals such as gold, silver and uranium.

The team’s snapshot of this violent and powerful collision that took place at 130 million Lightyears far away from us in the galaxy NGC 4993, was created with a wide range of instruments, incl The Hubble Space Telescope. Hopefully it will paint a picture of the “past, present and future” of the mergers of these dead dense stars. This could reveal the origins of elements heavier than iron, which cannot be forged even in the most massive stars.
