Social Media Rumor About School Bullying Is False | News, Sports, Jobs

ESCANABA — A social media rumor that Escanaba Area School boys were bullying female students after the election of Donald Trump to be the country’s next president is false, according to a letter the district sent to families Thursday.

“We were recently made aware of a post on social media referencing the last presidential election, which states that men are walking around school telling women, ‘Your body, my choice.’ We want to be absolutely clear: We have had no reports from students or staff that this type of behavior is occurring. This is a social media rumor, it’s false and it appears to have originated outside of our area.” Escanaba Area Schools Superintendent Coby Fletcher wrote in the letter.

The original post, which was widely shared, appears to have originated on “Delta County Michigan Just the facts, no bullshit” Facebook page. The page is well known as a liberal counterpart to a similarly named conservative page, both sharing local and national political content.

“Trending at Escanaba High today: boys walking around telling girls ‘your body, my choice’ over and over. The effects of choosing a rapist are immediate and all I can do is cry.” the original post reads.

The post was made on Wednesday at 3.26pm by an account believed to be owned by a woman who lives in Gladstone. It has been shared 48 times by 3pm on Thursday.

The letter sent to parents by Escanaba-area schools said students can report concerns to their teachers or principals, make confidential reports through a school form or make confidential reports through the OK2SAY reporting app. These reports will be immediately investigated by the school and administrators and action would be taken where necessary.

The letter also said that the school staff worked hard to maintain a healthy environment on campus every day.

“Again, I want to emphasize that we have not received any reports of this type of behavior occurring in our schools. However, we encourage students to notify us of any concerns using one of the methods above,” the letter ended.
