Landlord wants to ban packages due to excessive tenant deliveries

A landlord is considering taking controversial action due to non-stop deliveries from tenants.

The landlord explained why she’s fed up with her tenants in a recent post on Am I an A-hole? subredditHer tenants—a couple in their forties—live in the basement apartment of her house, with a separate entrance but a shared mailbox.

She says the pair are ordering such an excessive number of takeaway packages that they are considering banning deliveries or raising the rent.

“She’s a substitute teacher all day and he’s ‘retired’ and at home during the day. They are generally great tenants – the rent is always on time and they are easy to live with. However, she is a shopaholic, constantly ordering packages I don’t mind with the occasional delivery, but the sheer volume has become overwhelming,” the Reddit user wrote.

The owner explained that she “frequently” orders from sites such as Amazon herself and has always received packages sent to the garage without “any problem”.

The tenants then moved out and went on an “extended holiday abroad”, the landlord said, explaining how they mentioned they would get “a few packages” shipped back. However, the woman insisted they were not “few”.

“I agreed, but was soon inundated with over 20 large boxes, some weighing 30-40 pounds. I took them to the garage until they came back. I brushed it off, thinking it was a one time thing. two week cruise and several packages have arrived since then, deliveries have not slowed down,” the poster insisted.

Despite asking the couple to send deliveries to the garage, as she does, she said “there were still packages left” on the porch.

“Again, I spoke with her and suggested she rent a mailbox at a nearby mail store, but she said it was too expensive and inconvenient with her schedule,” the owner wrote, adding that the female tenant “was agree to send packages”. at her sister’s during the holidays, but that doesn’t address the day-to-day issue.”

Packages were dropped on the front porch “three or four times a day,” she says. And it was difficult for him to move the packages because of a broken disc in the back, which he claimed the tenants knew about.

“Almost tripped over boxes just opening the door to leave the house,” the poster continued. “Two weeks ago, there were two huge boxes taking up my entire front porch.”

The owner added: “I’m usually easy to get along with but I’m tired of being the ‘middle man’ for her ‘shopping’ as she jokes and I feel it’s very inconsiderate,” saying she’s now “thinking about grow”. additional hassle rent or complete ban on deliveries’.

In the comments section, many Reddit users sided with the tenants.

“Why are you making this your problem? Let her deal with the natural consequences if her packages start getting stolen,” one person wrote.

Another said: “I’m paying you rent to share a PO box, the amount of packages they order is irrelevant.”

“They have every right to order as many packages as they want where they live,” insisted a third person.

One commenter offered a simple potential solution: “Can you post a sign on the porch for the delivery people that says ‘Please put all deliveries in the garage’?”

Another offered a more formal potential solution: “You can always make a written amendment to your lease with proper notice, but I would seek advice on the appropriate guidelines and verbiage.”
