Delightful Shecky double springboard license holder, Dylan Caboche

Lovely Shecky he is the type of horse every budding trainer hopes they can get their hands on at the start of their career.

Nothing builds confidence like a few back-to-back wins and a dual license holder Dylan Caboche can attest to that by training Delightful Shecky – a five-year-old son of Delightful Choice – to a hat-trick of wins over the Adelaide Carnival earlier this year.

Cabochewho has ridden 196 winners as a jockey since 2014, took a dual license in March 2023.

Had a dream start, won with his first runner at Balaclavaalbeit under his father Patrick’s name as his trainer’s license had only been approved the day before.

However, twelve months later Caboche’s name was front and center when Delightful Shecky scored three wins in a row at Morphettvilleculminating in a victory in the David Thomas Memorial SA Sprint Series Final on The South Australian Derby Day.

Caboche was confident his gelding was ready to perform, but winning a feature with only the 27th runner was a welcome surprise.

“It was pretty exciting (the build-up) and it was especially during our carnival here, to win the final on Derby Day, it brought a lot of people and excitement,” Caboche said.

“From the trials and the jumps leading up to them we thought they could win a few, at the start of training we had the idea of going to the final but not expecting to win it.

“When he put three in a row together and put them away, it definitely added some excitement.”

Delightful Shecky had three starts for Caboche’s sire, winning on debut at Morningtonbefore transferring to Adelaide last April.

“Trained for breeder, Ray Jonesthen he ended up coming to me,” he said.

“He’s a strong horse to handle and can carry on, so he came here and ended up with me when I got my trainer’s license.”

Castrul resumed from a period in October, with a third place behind Plus Four and The surprise is coming at Morphettville.

Saturday will see him lined up in a Gytrash Series Open Handicap over 1250m at Morphettville. Talented circle Jacob Opperman is reserved to ride.

“He was 90 per cent fit last start, it was a little bit short, he’s come better than that, so hopefully he’s on point on Saturday,” he said.

“If he can win tomorrow, he’ll book himself a place in the Gytrash final, there is Christmas Handicap in December, we propose it”.

Caboche enjoys training, which keeps him busy despite being currently sidelined from racing.

“I’m injured, I had knee surgery last week so I’ll be out for the next eight weeks,” he said.

“I like (training) – it’s busy but really enjoyable. Having a Saturday horse is really exciting, it definitely gets you up in the morning.”

Delightful Shecky is a $2.80 favorite with Sportsbet fixed odds on Saturday.
