Track of powerful Hurricane Rafael over the central gulf and increasing chance of rain for the weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Rafael is still a strong Category 2 hurricane, and the system should gradually weaken as it moves into the western Gulf this weekend. The big question remains, will the system continue west or southwest toward Mexico? There is still a lot of uncertainty as some guidance shows the system turning back to the north or northeast. As for our area, I don’t expect any direct impacts from this system this weekend. That said, a cold front will still bring good chances for wet weather this weekend.

WHEN AND WHERE TO EXPECT RAIN

FRIDAY: Plan for another warm day on Friday with partly sunny skies. The chance for a few isolated showers will return through the afternoon and evening. So plan for the possibility of showers for high school football.

SATURDAY: More scattered showers will be possible Saturday morning with some nice breaks for Saturday afternoon. So the best time for outdoor activities on Saturday will be in the afternoon/evening. However, plan for an increasing chance of showers late Saturday night and into Sunday, especially in west Alabama. If you’re traveling west for College Football at LSU and LA Tech, plan for a high chance of rain on Saturday.

SUNDAY: The best chance of rain on Sunday is in the afternoon and evening. There may also be some rumbles of thunder. The chance for showers and thunderstorms should taper off early on Veterans Day, with isolated rain chances for Monday afternoon.

THE NEXT BIG THING: A cold front will bring another chance for showers and storms through the middle of next week. Plan for a chance of showers and thunderstorms next Wednesday and Thursday. We continue to see strong signs of a cooler air surge behind next week’s cold front, so stay tuned!
