Fairfield residents are turning RVs into homes for North Carolina’s Helene victims

FAIRFIELD, Va. (WDBJ) – It’s been over a month since Hurricane Helene and communities across North Carolina are still working to recover.

But here in our hometowns, people still step up to lend a hand; and the Fairfielders borrow a house.

A Fairfield group is packing RVs with everything a family might need to become a new home for those who lost everything in Hurricane Helene.

Home has always been where you have a roof over your head and a bed to sleep in. But in Lake Lure, NC, that no longer exists for many residents.

Bonnie Wilmer saw it herself.

“I think Lake Lure alone had 60 families that are in tents,” Wilmer said. “They have nothing now but their sleeping bag in the ground.”

So she and a few friends create houses and send them to those people.

“(My friend) said he was going to buy trailers and some of them would need to be cleaned, I said bring them home, my friends will come help,” Wilmer said.

Over the past week, people have been donating RVs to Wilmer. Someone came from Ohio to drop one off.

She and her crew clean and pack them with basic necessities that have also been donated and other items to make them feel like home.

“They have a new grill here, charcoal grill, new toaster, new dishes, new brooms, mops, new sheets for their bed, new pillows for their bed and all the toiletries and whatever they would need (and) -they stocked up with some food. Wilmer said, walking around the trailer.

So far, three caravans have been sent to Lake Lure.

“They’re very, very grateful,” Wilmer said, recalling the reaction of North Carolinians. “I know they said a little girl was so excited to have a home. And these people are in tents and it’s getting a little too cold for that.

And two more families will have homes delivered on Friday.

“We’re going to keep going, as long as we keep getting the money to pay for it,” Wilmer said.

Wilmer said she and her group are always accepting donations. They collect everything from food to hygiene products, mattresses and clothing. Monetary donations will go towards buying more trailers to fill.

The best way to help is through Wilmer’s Facebook. You can find her page Here.
