Inmate allegedly threatened to bomb Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s home in letter, officials say

An incarcerated man has been indicted for sending Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer a threatening letter, officials said.

Jihaad Ahmad, 36, who is incarcerated in the Michigan Department of Corrections, was charged with one count of making a false report or terroristic threat, according to a statement from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

The man allegedly sent a threatening letter to Whitmer’s office in May.

In the letter, Ahmad threatened his life and also threatened to bomb his house once he was released from prison.

“Violence and violent rhetoric directed at elected officials pose significant threats not only to them, but to our democracy as a whole,” Nessel said. “My department is committed to prosecuting this crime to the fullest extent of the law.”

Ahmad faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000 on the charge.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on November 14.
