Texas Longhorns WR Johntay Cook will enter the transfer window

(This story has been updated to add new information.)

Texas Longhorns second-year wide receiver Johntay Cook is reportedly no longer with the program. Geoff Ketchum of OrangeBloods says a source close to the football team “confirmed” Cook was “fired.’

Inside Texasfirst to report on Cook’s departure, says the the separation had been building for some time“IT doesn’t feel the need to disclose the ‘locker room’ aspects of this separation, but it has been coming to a head for some time.”

In Thursday’s press availability, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed Cook’s departure. “Obviously, we had some roster movement today with Johntay Cook moving on,” Sarkisian said. “We have nothing but respect for him and his family. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours.” When asked whose decision it was, Sark said, “It was mutual between the two of us.”

Cook has 8 catches for 137 yards (17.1 yards per catch) and two touchdowns this season, but the DeSoto product hasn’t had a reception since the Sept. 28 game at Mississippi State.

Cook, who was considered a key piece of the future roster, was pushed out of the rotation by the likes of Isaiah Bond, DeAndre Moore, Matthew Golden, Ryan Wingo and senior Silas Bolden.

A 5-star out of high school, Cook was part of the much-touted 2023 recruiting class that also included Arch Manning.
