Dave McCormick appears to be claiming victory over Bob Casey in the Senate race

Republican candidate for the US Senate Dave McCormick on Thursday appeared to declare victory in his race against the Democratic incumbent Bob Casey Jr. despite the Associated Press not having called the race and the possibility that the narrow margin could trigger Pennsylvania’s automatic recount process.

McCormick is currently up about 31,000 votes, or 0.4%, with more than 95% of the vote expected. Pennsylvania law provides for automatic recounts for elections where the margin is 0.5 percent or less.

But McCormick spokeswoman Elizabeth Gregory noted that “ruby red” Cambria County, where McCormick has more than 60 percent of the vote, is only halfway through counting manual ballots because of problems with its voting machines on the day the elections.

“As the votes continue to be counted, any way you slice them, Dave McCormick will be the next United States Senator from Pennsylvania,” Gregory said in a statement.

While nearly all other counties have finished counting regular Election Day and mail-in ballots, Casey’s campaign may be looking at the possibility that provisional ballots in Philadelphia and other counties could swing the race in their favor. Philadelphia city commissioners will consider provisional ballots Friday morning.

The Casey campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Gregory’s statement. But Casey spokeswoman Maddy McDaniel said earlier Thursday that the campaign is “committed to making sure the voice of every Pennsylvanian is heard and confident that at the end of this process, Sen. Casey will be re-elected.”

“The Pennsylvania countdown continues,” McDaniel said. “Yesterday, the margin narrowed by 50,000 votes, and this race is now within half a point of the threshold for automatic recounts in Pennsylvania.”
