Allegations: Man accused of causing seven-vehicle crash had open bottle, was driving about 100 mph

A criminal complaint filed Thursday says Talon Covie-Cardrell Walker of St. Paul was formally charged with one count of culpable homicide – grossly negligent driving.

A man has been formally charged for his role in a seven-vehicle crash earlier this week in Minneapolis that left one person dead, court records show.

A criminal complaint filed Thursday says Talon Covie-Cardrell Walker of St. Paul was formally charged with one count of culpable homicide – grossly negligent driving. In addition, his license had been revoked effective June 17, 2021, according to the document.

While Walker is listed on the jail’s website, a mugshot photo was not immediately available.

The document says troopers were called around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday to the eastbound I-94 exit ramp near Lyndale Avenue for a crash. The crash closed a section of eastbound I-94 until just before 2 a.m. Thursday.

When troopers arrived, they found several vehicles “with significant damage” and “several people with minor to serious injuries.” As reported Thursday morning by 5 EYE WITTNESS NEWSone of the victims, identified as 26-year-old Natalie Gubbay, died of her injuries at the scene.

Gubbay was a research associate and data scientist at the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis. Abigail Wozniak, director of the Institute for Opportunity and Inclusive Growth at the Minneapolis Fed, said in a statement that Gubbay “has co-authored ground-breaking work on economics” and helped “advance our understanding of native incomes.”

“She was articulate, kind and meticulous in her work. As colleagues and friends, we appreciated her quiet spirit and her love of the outdoors,” Wozniak wrote. “He was planning a career in quantitative social science, and we lost a creative and caring scholar. We mourn the loss of her bright future and are grateful for the time we had with her.”

Another person – identified in the State Patrol incident report as a St. 20-year-old Paul in Walker’s vehicle — suffered serious injuries and was taken to HCMC. Neither she nor Walker were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The complaint says Walker was driving a Chevy Avalanche on the I-94 East exit ramp to Dunwoody Boulevard while several other vehicles were driving slowly. Walker then allegedly sideswiped another SUV and crashed into the back of a Jeep Cherokee, pushing it into the back of a Ford Edge, causing a chain reaction of three other vehicles.

Witnesses believed Walker was driving about 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash, and the force of the impact was so strong that two of the vehicles involved were pushed sideways, according to the complaint.

The results of a blood sample taken from Walker are still pending. The complaint adds that officers found a bottle of alcohol on the driver’s side floor of his vehicle, adding that it was open and partially full.

Walker has a hearing at 1:30 p.m. Friday. If convicted, Walker faces up to 10 years behind bars and a $20,000 fine.
