Hundreds of Fijian women gathered in Suva today to celebrate the centenary of Isoqosoqo Vakamarama iTaukei, the country’s largest indigenous women’s organisation.

The event recognized the achievements and contributions of Indigenous women to their communities and the nation.

Among the many participants was 84-year-old Lora Lolou from Somosomo in Cakaudrove, who made the trip to town especially for the event.

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime for us because it empowers Indigenous women and recognizes the talents we possess, it’s a chance to show how much we can contribute to society.”

Also present was Rewa’s mother, Sailoama Tinaivakatovo, who hopes the celebration will open new doors for rural women’s groups, especially in terms of financial opportunities.

“This event provides a platform to promote our arts both locally and internationally. It’s about creating pathways for women to become economically empowered.”

In his speech, the British High Commissioner for Fiji, Dr Brian Jones praised the significant role women play in building stronger organisations, particularly in the workplace.

“Strong women are essential to strengthening any organization, whether they are at home, in the community or at work. When women thrive, society thrives.”

Isoqosoqo Vakamarama iTaukei, established over a century ago, continues to play a crucial role in supporting and promoting Indigenous women in Fiji.

It has over 200,000 members.
