The public safety tax measure is too close to call on Tuesday

A measure asking voters whether an additional 1 percent sales and use tax should be used to fund public safety was still too close to call Wednesday afternoon.

1,258 residents voted “Yes” on Mead Ballot Issue 2Q and 1,239 voted “No” on it, according to the Weld County Clerk and Recorder’s website.

The additional sales and use tax would fund more police officers and school resource officers, equipment, public safety facilities and increased community policing.

On Tuesday, Mead voters rejected a measure to allow a limited number of medical and retail marijuana businesses to operate in the city. However, some restrictions were attached to Ballot Question 2R, including that marijuana businesses would be prohibited from operating in the historic downtown area. Instead, marijuana businesses would be allowed to operate in a specific zoning district, likely near the Interstate 25 corridor, according to the ballot language.

Ballot Question 2R received 1,000 “Yes” votes and 1,500 “No” votes as of 10 p.m. Tuesday.
