Police ask BookMyShow to prevent black-marketing of tickets ahead of Coldplay tour

  • Police have ordered BookMyShow to prevent black-marketing of tickets ahead of Coldplay’s tour.
  • Coldplay is set to tour India in January 2025 for its concerts.
  • A PIL has also been filed seeking guidelines to curb black marketing and ticket scalping.

The cyber wing of the Maharashtra police has issued a notice to online ticketing website BookMyShow, asking it to implement strict measures, including selling tickets by name for British band ‘Coldplay”s concerts in January and other shows.

The notification was issued by Maharashtra’s cyber wing to prevent exploitation of fans buying tickets from online platforms, an official said on Wednesday.

There is a growing number of complaints on online forums and social media about problems being faced in booking tickets for such high-profile concerts and events through online platforms, an official said.

Many people have reported unresponsive websites during critical booking periods, he said, adding that this leads to tickets being black-marketed at exorbitant prices, sometimes as much as 10 times the original price.

The Maharashtra Cyber wing found that the measures taken by the platforms to avoid such situations were insufficient, the official said.

A public interest litigation (PIL) was also filed in the Bombay High Court seeking guidelines to curb black marketing and ticket scalping at major events amid alleged foul play during the online sale of tickets for Coldplay’s highly anticipated concert in Navi Mumbai in January 2025.

The PIL said that there are several irregularities and illegalities during the sale of tickets for major events like concerts, live shows and so on.

Such irregularity and illegality was noticed in September when Coldplay concert tickets were made available on the BookMyShow platform, the statement said.
