BC nurse suspended for theft of narcotics for personal use

A BC nurse has been suspended for a week for diverting narcotics from the workplace and using them personally, according to the profession’s regulatory body.

The College of Nurses and Midwives of BC says the nurse also falsified medical records to hide the embezzlement and worked while impaired.

“The registrant also has a history of narcotics diversion and regulatory intervention for the same concerns,” an online summary of the consent agreement approved Thursday between the college and the nurse said.

The college says the nurse has been diagnosed with a disability with a “causal relationship to the practice problems” and will undergo recommended treatment.

The nurse is not named in the agreement because of personal health information laws because they have a medical condition that has affected their ability to practice, the regulator noted.

For the latest offenses that took place between April and August 2023, the nurse was reprimanded and suspended for one week.

The person must also sign up to a “medical monitoring agreement” for three years; will not have access to narcotics, benzodiazepines and other controlled substances; and for six months he is prohibited from working overtime, night shifts, as a medical assistant, supervising students or orienting new staff.

“The inquiry commission is satisfied that the terms will protect the public,” the announcement said.
