Jockey Tommy Berry suspended, fined for 2024 Big Dance race

Horse racing: Gringotts knocked out Randwick’s Big Dance in the third year of the race.


The stewards issued a fine of $10,000 and suspended the star circle Tommy Berry for his winning trip aboard Gringotts in Tuesday’s $3 million Big Dance (1600m) at Randwick.

Berry produced a bit of magic to get Ciaron Maher-trained gallop over a wide barrier in the early stages of Randwick’s film Melbourne Cup day, but an incident at the 1300 m mark caught the attention of the commissioners.

The fine comes just days after the international ring Ciern Fallon was fined $100,000 and suspended for a month for his winning ride aboard Lake Forest in The Golden Eagle.


Antonio Orani was hit with a $30,000 fine in the same race – both for careless riding charges.

They handed Berry a careless riding charge for allowing the horse to move ahead of him Ducasse in that horse’s straight running line.

Berry pleaded guilty to the charge.

“T. Berry (Gringotts) pleaded guilty to a charge of negligent riding under AR131(a) in that, near 1300m, he allowed his mount to move at a sharp angle along Ducasse’s fair run , which has been verified,” the stewards said. ‘ he read the report.

“T. Berry’s license to drive has been suspended for a period commencing on Sunday 9 November 2024 and expiring on Friday 22 November 2024, the date on which he is eligible.

“T. Berry was also fined $10,000. In assessing the penalty, the stewards took into account the high degree of negligence and the status of this race.”

Jockey Christian Reith was also suspended for a careless riding charge in the sixth race on the card while aboard Melody Again.

Reith’s suspension begins on November 12th and runs until November 16th.
