Man arrested after Brighton pedestrian runs | Crime and Justice

A Brighton man handed himself in a month after a pedestrian accident left a young man seriously injured.

Lazaro Maya, 35, was arrested Monday by the Brighton Police Department in connection with the Oct. 4 hit-and-run. Maya was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury and driving without a license. , according to a department press release.

Police initially responded to the crash around 7 p.m. in the area of ​​North Main Street/County Road 27 and County Road 2 1/2 on reports that a pedestrian had been struck by two different vehicles. Upon arrival, officers found a 22-year-old man suffering from serious injuries.

Initial investigations found the man was walking before he was struck by the suspect vehicle. The suspect car then fled the scene. Police did not say whether speed or traffic violations were a factor in the crash.

The man was then hit by a second vehicle who claimed not to have seen the victim. The driver of the second vehicle stopped and cooperated with police.

Formal charges against Maya will be filed by the Weld District Attorney’s office.
