Every now and then, a movie comes along with a fairly simple premise, only for things to get complicated by the time the end credits roll. It is the case with Time cutHannah Macpherson’s slasher that arrived on 2024 film schedule at the end of October 2024 and immediately became a hit among people with a Netflix subscription.

The film follows teenager Lucy Field (Madison Bailey) as she stumbles upon a time machine in 2024 and travels back to 2003 when she manages to prevent her sister Summer (Antonia Gentry) from being brutally murdered by a masked killer. And while it appears to have a relatively Eastern-oriented story on the surface, it quickly becomes a complicated exploration of place, time, and where we fit into it. So much so that you might need an explanation to make sense of it all.

With that being said, let’s break it down Time cut the end, the various paradoxes of time in this surprising great horror moviehow things end for all the major players and what Macpherson had planned for his grand finale too. But before we begin, remember that some major spoilers follow.

Two Quinns at once

In the last minutes of Time cutthe Sweetly Slasher, the serial killer who slaughtered four high school students in April 2003, is revealed to be none other than Quinn (Griffin Gluck), but not the likable, warm-hearted version of the character who helps Lucy unravel the mystery of her sister’s murder. and prevent it from happening. Instead, he’s a future version of the character from an alternate timeline still angry at Summer for rejecting him and being bullied by his peers years ago.

How do we end up with two Quinns? Well, earlier in the movie, Lucy saves the still-friendly Quinn from being thrown into a river by a group of thugs, which essentially sets up a path for the character where he probably won’t become an obsessed killer and vicious. However, this does not mean that the deranged Quinn who is already planning his attack is written out of existence.

Similar to how time travel works Avengers: Endgame, Time cut has different timelines that branch off if something changes, which in this case would be the bullying incident that Lucy disrupts. But as far as we know, if someone leaves their timeline (using a time machine), they maintain their existence even if their past is changed. This would explain why the evil Quinn tells his younger version that killing himself would not stop the criminal version of him from existing. So this is almost the opposite how things work Back to the future.

Lucy still exists after saving her sister

Just before the evil Quinn can carry out his plan and kill Summer, Lucy attacks him and the two are thrown through a time warp to 2024, her original timeline. Appearing in a parking lot, the two continue their fight until Lucy electrocutes him and then stabs Quinn in the chest with her own knife, ending his life and reign of terror in the process. Summer and good Quinn, having come to terms with the fact that they will never see Lucy again after jumping 21 years into the future, are shocked to see their sister and friend respectively appear out of nowhere and saying he will go. to stay in their time.

Don’t keep comparing Time cut TO Avengers: Endgame finalbut Lucy almost pulls a Captain America by deciding to go back to a timeline where she’ll be happiest. Here, she’ll be able to have a life where she has a sister and not just a “looming presence” she could never live up to, and parents who aren’t the grief-stricken zombies she knew in her original reality. . However, this brings up a lot of questions about Lucy’s original timeline and whether a version of her still exists within it.

Does this mean Lucy no longer exists in 2024?

Near the end Time cutQuinn and Summer ask Lucy why she went back to 2003 and didn’t stay in her original timeline, and her answer leaves us with more questions than answers if we’re being honest. Although she admits that she tried to return to her original reality to see if anything was different, Lucy reveals that her parents did not recognize her.

Since Summer was not killed, her parents did not continue to conceive another child in an attempt to move on after Summer’s death. The fact that Lucy’s parents did not recognize her seems to confirm that they did not have another daughter. Or if they went on to have a second child, that child was not Lucy. So there is probably no Lucy in 2024, however it leaves us wondering, if Lucy hadn’t prevented Summer’s death, does that mean she would have found another version of her in 2024? Or would she have simply slipped back into her old timeline with some changes due to her time travel activities?

Regardless, as shown at the end of the movie, Lucy is a girl out of time, with no better place to be than 2003, where she can live her life with Summer and Quinn, as well as knowing everything that happened. in the last 21 years.

How could the cut time end

As it was the case of countless movie endings over the years, Time cut it could have wrapped in a way that would have had a happier feel, but it would have turned its nose up at the logic of time travel. When we talk about Time cut ending with Netflix Tudum after the release, director Hannah Macpherson shared an idea she thought of in the process:

I had a variety of different options for the ending, including both sisters being alive in the present day. Summer might have been 20 years older than Lucy, but they were both still alive. I just felt like that image of 45-year-old Summer and teenage Lucy wasn’t as happy as the two girls as teenagers getting to experience life together. It felt so good, time travel logic be damned.

While this would have been a fun way to end the movie, it doesn’t make sense considering Lucy’s parents didn’t make the decision to have another child until well after Summer’s death. Unless Summer, who was a teenager at the time, convinced her parents that she should try for number two, and even then, she and her sister would have been so far apart in age that they wouldn’t would have had the same relationship as them. they had together in 2003.

In general, Time cut the ending does a good job of wrapping things up, even if things get so complicated the more you think about it. And although it is far from being one of the the best movies on netflixthis sci-fi infused slasher film is a great addition to the list of great time travel movies.
