The Devereux Center in Coos Bay gets a 30-day license extension but remains closed

The business license for the Devereux Center, which provides services to the homeless in Coos Bay, has been extended 30 days; but the center remains closed following complaints from the city.

The Coos Bay City Council voted Tuesday night, November 5, 2024, to grant the extension. The center was closed on October 24, 2024 and was originally scheduled to reopen on Thursday, November 7, 2024.

All of this stems from an accusation by the city that the center violated the city’s nuisance order by failing to provide adequate support and security to those who rely on its services.

The city wants the center to build new fences and provide 24/7 security on site.

As the center works to find funding to address these concerns, it is also looking for a new leader; firing its previous director shortly after the shutdown began.
