GR Police are investigating reports of an attempted abduction of a 12-year-old girl

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Police are investigating reports of an attempted abduction of a 12-year-old girl in Grand Rapids.

The incident reportedly occurred Thursday, according to Chief Eric Winstrom of the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD).

We’re told an out-of-town man pulled up in a vehicle next to the girl — a student at Grand Rapids Public Schools — and asked if she wanted to drive her.

“I myself reviewed some of the body-worn camera (of) this incident, and I just heard the honesty, the sincerity and the fear from this girl…” Winstrom says.

Chief Winstrom says the driver has been identified, adding that officers have contacted him.

The incident remains under investigation.

“The difficult part for us is that we have certain criteria to meet, to get to probable cause to charge this person,” Winstrom says. “So whether this individual was attempting to commit a kidnapping, or headed in that direction, or was just doing something that wasn’t criminal.”

Chief Winstrom says the general public is not likely to be at risk in connection with the incident.
