Pistons’ Cade Cunningham earns praise for defending against LeBron James

Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers could be seen as a game declared by Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham.

Coming into the game, the Pistons were looking for their first streak of the year after defeating the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday night. Cunningham was a man on a mission against a LeBron James-led Lakers team that was the clear favorite going into the game.

Cunningham’s offensive brilliance was on full display Monday night. While he had a below-average scoring outing by his standards, he still scored 17 points, becoming one of six Pistons players to score in double figures against the Lakers.

Beyond the scoring, Cunningham dished out 11 assists. As he matched his assist numbers with his rebounds, the young veteran notched the third triple-double of his young career, moving up a Pistons all-time mark.

As much as Cunningham shined on the stat sheet, Detroit head coach JB Bickerstaff wanted to point to the veteran defense during his postgame press conference. While Cunningham took on the tough task of getting snaps against the NBA’s all-time scoring leader, Bickerstaff remained impressed with his franchise leader.

“He has the ability to be a great two-way player” Bickerstaff told reporters. “It has great dimensions. He has great intelligence and no fear. I thought he did a great job.”

Cunningham wasn’t tasked with exclusively guarding LeBron, but he certainly did his part in slowing down the future Hall of Famer throughout James’ 40-minute performance in Detroit.

LeBron made 16 shots from the field, generating seven markers. He scored 20 points tonight. The Lakers star had a double-double outing as he also accounted for 11 assists.

The Pistons put away the Lakers with an upset win, defeating them 115-103. While there’s still a long way to go in the season, the Pistons’ 3-5 start has been encouraging, especially for rising star Cade Cunningham.
