The Statistics Department figures are too good to be true, says Dr Wee

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) said the Department of Statistics (DOSM) data appeared “too good to be true”, adding that commodity prices continued to rise and did not reflect reality.

“When we mention an inflation rate of 1.9%, you should try asking people whether the price of Roti John or Murtabak has gone up or not? I must humbly admit that it has grown,” he told the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Nov 6).

“Whether we accept it or not, the truth is out there. What is the reason? Logistics costs 6% last year, even though F&B did not increase by 8%, but because SST continues to be used.

“I am not saying that the government should not rationalize subsidies; I understand the constraints the government is facing,” he said.

Dr Wee proposed that the government should tax vehicles based on their value, adding that as the people’s spokesperson, he would look for practical solutions.

He was responding to Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli, who said the rise in food prices was under control as he concluded his ministerial speech on the Supply Bill 2025.

Rafizi said the government of the day had been most successful in controlling rising food and drink prices since 2011.

He said the only time the increase was less than current levels was between July 2018 and May 2019, due to the removal of GST.
