Dogs are making a remarkable recovery in Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Two dogs endured a tough journey wandering the streets of Topeka.

The two dogs, formerly known as Miere and Urs, made a remarkable recovery after being adopted.

Mabel and Atticus, as the dogs are now known, were found on the streets in rough conditions and brought to Helping Hands Humane Society (HHHS) in Topeka. Grace Clinton, spokeswoman for the Humane Society, tells us what happened.

“When they first came to our shelter, it was on August 21st,” Clinton said. “They were brought to us by a good Samaritan, a member of the community, who found them in pretty rough shape. It’s pretty clear from the photos that a lot of people have seen them on the internet not feeling well.”

The HHHS medical team quickly discovered that both dogs had red scab.

“This is a skin condition that is caused by a type of canine skin mite,” Clinton said. “This particular strain they had was not contagious to other animals when they were here. But it caused severe hair loss, infections, pus, scabiness and skin irritation. It was really itchy and painful for these dogs.”

27 News spoke with Jessica Haskins, owner of Honey, now named Mabel, about how the recovery process is going.

“When we first got her, it was two baths a week,” Haskins said. “We’re still trying to keep up with them, but her skin is completely clear; is authorized by the veterinarian. He had to wear a sweater because he smelled very yeasty at first. But when I brought her home, just two days after meeting her, she was already the smell gone and now, of course, she loves sweaters.”

Haskins told us that Monday, Nov. 4, marked one month since Mabel’s adoption.

“Everybody is so happy,” Haskins said. “In the beginning, of course, everyone tells you that you don’t need a dog, you don’t need a dog and all the downsides of having another dog. But really, she’s been so positive for my whole family.”

KDOL says seasonal layoffs could explain the hold periods

Bear, now named Atticus, has found a forever home with two new sisters, Millie and Masie. Atticus’ owners are no strangers to Helping Hands, having adopted from there before. Atticus’ new owners said it didn’t take long for Millie and Masie to warm to him and vice versa.
