Delia and David discuss the case at Delia’s flat when DC Webb arrives to share the news that John has received four life sentences. Believing this means John will spend the rest of his life in prison, Delia is horrified to find that Sweeney could be eligible for parole in nine years and attacks DC Webb.

Although David tries to convince himself that his relationship with Delia is solid, it’s clear that he has doubts. Meanwhile, Delia takes out all her anger in writing angry letters to the police force and those she believes have failed her following her ordeal. When David later questions Delia about her admission in court that she has never loved anyone, an argument ensues that results in wine glasses being smashed and Delia being thrown out of a restaurant in a terrible rage.

Slurring her words, Delia meets some cops outside and ends up arguing with them. She is arrested for being drunk and disorderly and ends up spending the night in a cell. When she is released and arrives home the next morning, a frantic David is waiting for her after wandering around looking for her all night. Telling him she’s upset and not interested in talking to him, Delia ends their relationship.

Back at work, Delia is not only working in her regular job as a nurse, but also offering free therapeutic massage services. Striking a friendship with patient Nabil while giving him head massages, Delia finds herself quite disturbed when he is discharged from the ward – she was able to talk openly and laugh in his company, something she hadn’t done in a while.

A timeline shift to 2009 sees CID case officer Melissa Halstead in Amsterdam on the phone to the station handling the Paula Fields murder investigation in the UK. A cold case team finally identified Melissa’s remains after they were found in a canal in Rotterdam in 1995 – her family had just provided a DNA sample that matched Melissa. With her body identified and knowing she was also a known ex-girlfriend of John Sweeney, the team in Amsterdam are keen to break the news to officers in the UK.

Paula’s head, hands and feet had been removed in the same way as Melissa and the Amsterdam police knew this information would be of interest to the investigation of Paula, who had been found dismembered in an identical manner. With Sweeney eligible for parole, it’s a race against time to find evidence linking him to Melissa and Paula’s murders.

Sweeney previously admitted to Delia that he killed Melissa, but this information never made it to trial. The police visit Delia with this news about him, stating that if the case goes to court, he will have to testify. When he refuses, he is given the option to submit a video statement.

While Delia agrees with this option, she was drinking when the video was made. The police want to go ahead and use the footage anyway, but Sweeney asks her to give her statement in person, following a psychiatric evaluation to ensure she is able to provide evidence. Although warned not to drink before going to the psychiatrist, Delia is seen buying alcohol anyway.

On the morning of her assessment, Delia denies actually drinking any of the alcohol. Together with the psychiatrist, she gives a candid account of her attack and proves to be at risk of suicide. Because of this, it was decided that Delia was unsafe to testify in court in person. Finally, her statement is read by an official in court.

Delia is then seen breaking the news over the phone to her brother, that Sweeney has been found guilty of murdering Melissa Halstead and Paula Fields and will spend the rest of his life in prison with no chance of parole.

The closing moments of the finale show Delia leaving her apartment with a full backpack, before the scene cuts to her walking out to sea on a deserted beach. Viewers are told the series is based on Delia Balmer’s true memoir, Living with a serial killerand a photograph of her is displayed in her most recent trio abroad in South Africa in 2023. The series is dedicated to the memory of Melissa Halstead and Paula Fields.
