Four treated at Coatbridge ‘chemical spill’ site as area locked down for 19 hours

A road reopened 19 hours after a chemical spill was reported that left four people requiring treatment.

A large emergency service response was called to a commercial building on Cameron Street in Coatbridge at around 12.15pm following reports of a chemical leak.

Hazmat teams were called to the scene along with firefighters and police. Police urged the public to avoid the area.

Burnbank Street from Coltswood Road, Cromlet Drive and Northburn Industrial Estate was closed and local homes were also evacuated as a precaution.

The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that a special operations team treated four patients at the scene.

A spokesman said: “We received a call at 12.37pm today to assist the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to an incident on Cameron Street in Coatbridge.

“We sent an ambulance and our special operations team to the scene. We treated four patients on the spot.”

Police confirmed at 7.45am on Wednesday that the road had reopened and no injuries were reported.

A spokesman for the force said: “Cameron Street in Coatbridge has reopened following reports of a chemical spill yesterday. No one was injured in the incident and investigations are ongoing.”
