Actress reflects on holidays gone wrong ahead of new Christmas film ‘Red One’

Kiernan Shipka recalls a “big Christmas accident”.

The 24-year-old actress has no problem recalling a Christmas-related disaster as she hits the red carpet for the premiere of her new film in Berlin, Germany on Sunday, November 3. Red One. “I drank so much with my friends one night and I woke up the next day and I had – I’m telling you – a massive hump on my nose,” she said.

Demonstrating the mysterious facial injury, she says: “My nose literally popped out a little bit and then it came back.”

How did such an unfortunate incident happen? “I don’t know if I fell,” Shipka replies. “It is not clear how it happened. It lasted for several weeks. It was a big Christmas injury.”

Still, in the spirit of the holidays, she continues, “You know, we live, we learn, we have fun.”

Red Onein theaters November 15, has the role to play mad men alum next to it Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, Bonnie Hunt and JK Simmons. From director Jake Kasdan and writers Chris Morgan and Hiram Garcia, the holiday action comedy centers on a Santa Claus’s secret gift-delivery operations threatened on Christmas Eve by Grýla – a vengeful medieval entity played by Shipka.

“I’ve never really played a classic villain before,” reflects the actress. “It felt like intimidating shoes to fill. I got inspiration from many different places. A lot of random stuff.”

Simmons, 69, similarly found the role of Old Saint Nick “intimidating”. He tells PEOPLE that the role “has been played by some wonderful, wonderful actors, and I was glad that this was a very different interpretation of him.”

Codenamed Red One, the character is “not what people might expect,” teases the Oscar winner. “In the script of the first description of Santa Claus, it says that he is not exactly… cheerful. And I thought that really helped me.”

Shipka calls Simmons an “amazing” scene partner. “He is so supportive. I mean, everybody—they’re heavy, this whole cast. Everyone is so nice. And I was just watching, observing, exploring.”

Red One is in theaters November 15.
