(This story has been updated to add new information and to correct that there is no winner declared yet.)

In a close race, Republican Ryan Weldon is edging out Democratic incumbent Rep. Molly Buck for Iowa House District 41 in North Ankeny.

Earlier results showed Buck won the seat, but did not include the count of votes from a single precinct machine. As of 9:50 p.m., Weldon, 40, has 50.24 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results. Buck has 49.60% of the vote.

The Associated Press has not declared a winner in the race.

Polk County Auditor Jamie Fitzgerald said the discrepancy was because there were two voting machines at the final reporting precinct for the race, but one machine reported faster than the other at the site.

Weldon previously served as president of the Ankeny School Board.

One Des Moines Register Candidate QuestionnaireWeldon said his top priority is improving the state’s economy, such as new property tax policies for Iowans.

“Here in Iowa, we’ve proven that taxpayers, not government, know best how to spend their hard-earned money and that less government intervention is better for the economy, not more,” he said. “I am committed to finding additional opportunities to improve our local economy and continue our trajectory toward prosperity.”

One Des Moines Register Candidate QuestionnaireBuck said her top priority is fully funding public schools and restoring service to regional education agencies (EAAs). Funding was redirected from AEA, which provides special education services to students, in the last legislative session.

“Ensuring that every classroom is equipped with the necessary resources and that our AEAs can support our most vulnerable learners is crucial to a strong future. Investing in education not only improves individual opportunities, it strengthens our community as a whole,” she said.
