Webster man arrested for trafficking meth at an animal shelter

WEBSTER — A man was arrested Monday after he broke into a Webster animal shelter and tried to take his dogs, leading to the discovery of a significant amount of methamphetamine in his vehicle, police said.

Taj Wood, 25, of Cooper Road, was arrested around 3:50 p.m. after Webster Police Animal Control Officer Roussin, who previously opened an animal neglect investigation into the care of Wood’s dogs , called for police assistance when Wood became confrontational.

When officers arrived, Wood was attempting to leave the shelter in his vehicle, but Officer J.

Brooks stopped him.

Despite Wood’s uncooperative behavior, he was apprehended with the help of Chief Shaw, Lieutenant Wentworth, Officer Cedeno, and Officer Donovan.

The investigation revealed that Wood did not provide the proper documentation to claim her dogs and proceeded to forcibly remove them from the shelter, prompting Officer Roussin to request police assistance.

While searching Wood’s vehicle, Officer Donovan found a sandwich bag containing 126.7 grams of suspected methamphetamine pills, which were confirmed to be the drug through testing.

Wood, who is on electronic monitoring for previous charges including home invasion and armed assault, as well as firearms offenses, now faces charges of trafficking methamphetamine, theft, animal cruelty, breaking and entering.

He is being held on $50,000 cash bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Dudley District Court.
