US election 2024: Most voters think democracy is under threat, exit polls say

Most voters see democracy and the economy as their top concerns, while a majority in the November 5 US presidential election see American democracy under threat, according to preliminary polls revealed as polls are about to close in some states.

Nearly three-quarters of voters say American democracy is under threat, according to preliminary national exit polls Edison researchreflecting the deep anxiety facing the nation after a contentious campaign between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trumpa Reuters news report said.

Democracy and the economy ranked by far as the most important issues for voters, with about a third of respondents citing each, followed by abortion and immigration at 14 percent and 11 percent, the Edison Research exit poll data said. as reported by Reuters.

At least 73 percent of voters thought democracy was at risk, compared to just 25 percent who said it was safe, according to this poll.

Forty-four percent of voters viewed Republican nominee Donald Trump favorably, compared to 46 percent in exit polls in 2020, when he lost to President Joe Biden. Democrat Kamala Harris he was viewed favorably by 48 percent of respondents, compared to Biden’s rating of 52 percent in 2020, the poll found.

Exit polls showed that women made up 53% of the electorate, largely unchanged from 52% in 2020 exit polls.

The share of voters without a college degree — who heavily favor Trump — was 57 percent, down slightly from 59 percent in 2020, according to data from this exit poll.

The state of democracy and the economy were top of mind for voters as they cast ballots in the presidential election, according to early results from NBC News exit poll.

Democracy was ranked first by voters in this poll as well, with 35 percent saying it was the issue that mattered most in deciding how they voted for the president, followed by the economy at 31 percent. Ranked voters abortion (14 percent) and immigration (11 percent) are next important, while only 4 percent said foreign policy.

Women were more likely than men to prioritize abortion, with 19 percent of women calling it the most important issue, compared to just 8 percent of men, the NBC poll said.

The economy and immigration are the main issues facing the country, voters said, but the future of democracy was also a primary reason for many. American voted in Tuesday’s presidential election. The AP VoteCast, a broad survey of more than 110,000 voters nationwide, found a country mired in negativity and desperate for change.

Democracy was ranked first by voters in this poll as well, with 35% saying it was the issue that mattered most.
