Jackson Bowers Street shooting victim linked to 9-year-old’s 2022 death

A man who was shot to death Monday in South Jackson was previously convicted of his alleged involvement in the 2022 shooting death of a 9-year-old child.

The Jackson Police Department issued a news release Tuesday afternoon saying 20-year-old Tristan Kimes was shot Monday in the 3500 block of Bowers Street. Police said Kimes died at the scene.

No suspicious information was provided in the press release.

Public Information Officer Tommie Brown confirmed to the Clarion Ledger that Kimes is the same man who was charged in October 2022 in connection with the accidental shooting death of 9-year-old elementary school student Lily Bracey.

Authorities reported the shooting happened on Oct. 12, 2022, at the Graystone Hills apartment complex on Chadwick Drive.

Police said Bracey was walking home from school when she was shot in the neck by another 9-year-old with a gun.

According to police, the fatal shooting was accidental and intended as a prank. Apparently, the two children were friends.

Bracey was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment, but died of her injuries at the hospital.

Court records show police arrested Kimes, who was 18, for giving the unidentified child “a loaded 9mm handgun” to play with.

According to court documents, a Hinds County grand jury indicted Kimes on the following charges:

  • Felony 1, Neglect of a Child: Kimes “deprived LB and RH, both nine years old, of food, clothing, medical care or supervision appropriate to the ages of LB and RH, resulting in substantial injury to both LB and for RH. , mental or emotional health.” Kimes “provided” RH with the gun that RH “accidentally discharged.”

  • Account. 2: Alteration of Physical Evidence: Kimes “intentionally destroyed, mutilated, concealed, removed, and/or altered physical evidence from the home where nine-year-old RH shot nine-year-old LB, to the effect that he removed the 9mm pistol that LB. was shot from the residence and hid it in some bushes…”

  • Count 3: Possession of a Stolen Firearm: Kimes obtained possession of a 9 mm handgun that was “reported stolen from New Orleans, Louisiana.”

In October 2023, Kimes pleaded guilty to a charge of child neglect. Kimes was sentenced, on Count 1, to serve 18 months in the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Courts 2 and 3 were remanded in custody as per the plea agreement.
