2024 Wisconsin Senate race has Sens. Tammy Baldwin and Eric Hovde in tight race

Sen. Tammy Baldwin is struggling to hold on Senate seat in a close race against Republican Eric Hovde in the battleground state of Wisconsin.

The chair is one of several for the 2024 election which are seen as crucial to control of the Senate as Republicans work to build a majority. The race in the Badger State, among the most competitive this cycle, was a painful one as the two candidates each sought to portray the other as coastal elites on the move with Wisconsinites.

Baldwin, 62, was first elected to the Senate in 2012 after representing Wisconsin in the House for more than a decade. He has a long history of courting rural voters in the state — in his last race, he won counties that supported trump carddespite his progressive politics.

Hovde, 60, also sought the GOP nomination in 2012, but it went to former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, who lost the election to Baldwin. As president and CEO of Utah-based Sunwest Bank, Hovde is one of many Republican Senate candidates have been recruited in part for their ability to finance their own campaigns this cycle.

Throughout the campaign, Baldwin painted Hovde as a rich, out-of-touch businessman. He campaigned on issues like immigration and criticized Baldwin for her record in Washington.

The race became personal in the final stages of the campaign as Republican ads raised hints about Baldwin’s long-term partner, a financial adviser, and her business dealings. While Republicans have called on Baldwin to disclose her partner’s assets, claiming in ads that Baldwin is “in bed with Wall Street” and calling her “New York’s third senator,” Democrats have accused the GOP of trying to draws attention to her sexuality. Baldwin is the first openly LGBTQ senator in history.

Meanwhile, Democrats have worked to highlight Hovde’s ties to California. They also focused on a number of controversial comments by Hovde, including the suggestion that people in nursing homes do not have the ability to vote.

The Cook Political Report rated the race as a disadvantage heading into Election Day, changing its rating from weakly Democratic in early October as the state appeared to tighten. Baldwin was seen as the most vulnerable of the Democratic Senate candidates in the blue-wall states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, and Hovde saw some momentum in the late stages of the campaign.
