Loaded gun found in Marietta preschool child’s backpack

Marietta police are working to see if charges will be filed after a loaded gun was found by a student at an elementary school.

The discovery took place Monday morning at the Emily Lembeck Early Learning Center.

In a letter to parents, Marietta City Schools Director of Early Childhood Education Christine Ramirez said the child found the gun in her backpack while looking for her lunch.

The child told the teacher, who immediately removed the bag and called the police.

According to Ramirez, the child’s regular bag broke and their parent gave them another bag, not realizing the gun was inside.

“MPD confirmed that there was no intent to harm the student or parent, and the teacher confirmed that the weapon was never displayed in the classroom,” she wrote.

The Marietta Police Department is investigating the incident and has not determined if the parent will be charged.
