West Virginia is the third most haunted state, survey finds

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) – West Virginia has its fair share of scary things, from its old haunted buildings to its abundance of cryptids, and all of these factors have made it one of the most haunted states in the nation.

A study carried out by moving the moveBuddha site ranked each state based on three scores related to its haunted level. These scores were made up of several different factors and you can find the breakdown below:

  • The Spook Score it consists of…

  • The The creep score it consists of…

  • The Boo score it consists of…

All of these scores were then combined into a final score that determined how haunted each state is.

Overall, West Virginia ranked third in the nation with a spook score of 9.3, a haunted score of 5.2, a booed score of 6.9 and a final haunted score of 9.23, less 0.1 behind second place Michigan. West Virginia’s spook score was also the highest of any other state to make the top 10.

The study credits West Virginia’s more than 18,000 cemeteries as one of the reasons it ranks so highly, as well as its abundance of cryptids, especially the Mothman.

There are also many other notable haunted locations that are not featured in this study such as Dingess Tunnel in Mingo County— the site of two fatal train wrecks and where people were allegedly ambushed and killed, WVU’s clock tower that some say is haunted by the ghost of a cow and the Abandoned Lake Shawnee Amusement Park in Mercer County.
