American Airlines’ new system calls passengers who board early

Boarding a plane can be a stressful and hectic process for anyone, especially when people cut the line and board before they should. American Airlines is working to fix this issue.

The airline has tested a new boarding system that helps eliminate “gate lice” from those boarding the plane.

“‘Gate Lice’ is a term used to describe passengers who block the gate in anticipation of boarding the plane before their group is called,” according to USA Today.

The new technology is the airline’s way of trying to make boarding easier for both gate agents and passengers.

“There’s so much for a gate crew member to do, so we’re constantly looking for ways we can use technology to make it easier for both groups,” said an American Airlines spokesperson. USA Today.

How does American Airlines’ new system work?

The new technology will alert gate agents when customers attempt to board the plane before their assigned boarding group is called to line up and board.

“Boarding passes of these passengers will trigger a beep and display a message to gate agents. They will not be allowed to board and instead will be instructed to wait their turn,” per CBS.

People pay or earn the privilege of early boarding, so when passengers board early, it can anger others and increase the stress and frustrations that come with flying.

According to The New York Times“American Airlines said it was pleased with the results so far, as were several passengers who took to social media to share their thoughts.”

One passenger posted on Reddit, saying they “had fun watching hidden passengers get embarrassing justice in front of everyone,” according to The New York Times.

Where is American Airlines testing the new system?

The airline began testing the new technology a few weeks ago at Albuquerque International Sunport in New Mexico and Tucson International Airport in Arizona, USA Today.

American Airlines also began testing the new technology at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia.
